One island, and a short list of what we do badly
We are a small operator working on Phu Quoc and nowhere else. This page covers how we are put together, what we refuse to do, and where we are genuinely not the right company.
What we are
Beyond Phu Quoc is a tour operator working on Phu Quoc island only. We run nine trips: five that fit inside a day and four short tours of two to five nights. We do not operate anywhere else in Vietnam, we do not sell flights, and we do not resell other people's itineraries.
The reason for the narrowness is not modesty. An operator selling the whole of Vietnam is, in practice, a booking desk that subcontracts to local operators in each place. That is a legitimate business and it is not what we do. Everything on this website is run by people who live on this island, on boats and in vehicles we have used ourselves, to places we can get to in ninety minutes.
How we are put together
Twelve on a boat, eight in a vehicle
The commercial An Thoi boat carries 35 to 45. We charter hulls rigged for twelve and sell eight seats in a sixteen-seat van. This is the single decision the whole price structure follows from.
No commission stops
Pearl farms, sim wine houses, honey outlets and fish sauce shops pay per head. We take none of it, which is why our day trips cost roughly double the cheapest ones and why nobody is waiting for you at the exit of anywhere.
Forty-five minutes early
Our boats leave An Thoi before the fleet does. It costs a crew starting an hour earlier and it is the difference between a good reef hour and a queue.
A weather call two days out
We read the marine forecast at 48 hours and again at 06:30 if it is borderline, and refund in money rather than credit notes.
Two things follow from that structure that are worth stating plainly. We are more expensive than most operators on this island. And we cannot take large groups without becoming the thing we are trying not to be.
What we are bad at
Every about page in this industry claims to be passionate. Here is the more useful information: four things we do not do well, in our own words.
- Groups over sixteen. Two vehicles, two guides, two boats, and every advantage we have disappears. We will run it if you insist and we will do a competent job, but a larger operator will do it better and cheaper.
- Budget travel. If your ceiling is USD 25 for a boat day, we have nothing for you and we are not going to pretend a cut-down version exists. The USD 18 boat is a real product and it is the right answer for a lot of people.
- Languages other than English and Vietnamese. We can find a French, Korean or Russian speaking guide on the island and we will do it, but they are not our guides and the day is not as good.
- Anywhere that is not Phu Quoc. Ha Tien, the Mekong Delta, Con Dao, Nha Trang — we know people, we will introduce you, and we take nothing for it. Do not book a mainland extension through us; you will pay a margin for a phone call.
Why there are no reviews on this website
There are no customer testimonials on any page of this site, and that is deliberate. Quotes on an operator's own website are unverifiable by definition — we choose which ones to publish and we could write them ourselves. Everybody knows this, which is why nobody reads them.
What we offer instead: ask us for the contact details of two recent guests from your own country who did the trip you are considering, and talk to them directly. We will ask their permission and pass on an email address. It takes us a day and it is worth more than fifty stars on a page we control.
Reviews on platforms we do not control are a different matter, and we would rather you read those than anything we wrote.
How we choose suppliers
- Boats: we have been on every hull we use, in the season we use it. Two things get a boat dropped — a skipper who sails when the forecast says not to, and a crew who take passengers to a floating restaurant they have an arrangement with.
- Guides: island residents, English-speaking, paid for a full day whether the group is two people or twelve. A guide paid per head has a reason to want a full boat, which is a reason we would rather they did not have.
- Hotels: we have stayed in every one we put you in. Commission exists and we take it; ask us what it is on any two options we offer and we will tell you.
- Restaurants: chosen for the food. We do not have arrangements, and the one place we send everybody to for lunch at Ganh Dau is a village restaurant that has no idea how many other people we have sent.
Licence and legal
Beyond Phu Quoc is a licensed Vietnamese tour operator. The registered company name, the international travel business licence number, the tax code and the insurer are all set out on the booking terms page, which is generated from our own records rather than retyped, so it cannot drift out of date.
A note on financial protection, because it matters and it is usually glossed over. A Vietnamese operator licence carries insurance requirements, and we meet them. It is not equivalent to an ATOL, ABTA or comparable bonding arrangement in Europe or Australia. If that gap concerns you, pay by card — the chargeback mechanism is the real protection available to you and it is worth the processing fee.
Ask us something difficult
Including whether we are the right company for your trip. Sometimes the answer is no.
Questions travellers ask most
Are you a local company?
We are registered in Vietnam and the people who run the trips live on Phu Quoc. Guides, drivers and boat crews are island residents.
We are not going to make a claim about being family-run for three generations, because Phu Quoc's tourism industry is barely fifteen years old and any company making that claim is describing something else.
Why do you only work on one island?
Because the alternative is subcontracting. An operator covering all of Vietnam books local operators in each place and takes a margin. We would rather be one of the local operators and be genuinely good at one place than be the desk in the middle.
Do you take commission from shops and restaurants?
No. That is the reason our day trips cost what they do, and it is the single clearest difference between us and the cheaper operators. The commission model is not dishonest — it is disclosed nowhere and it is universal here — but it decides where you get taken, and we would rather that decision were made on other grounds.
What happens if something goes wrong while we are on the island?
You have a WhatsApp number answered by a person who lives here, not a call centre. For anything medical, the island has clinics and a hospital for routine problems, and anything serious means a transfer to the mainland — which is why insurance covering evacuation is on every one of our exclusion lists.
